We at Catholic Charities USA have set a goal to cut poverty in half by 2020. We can achieve this goal by “thinking and acting anew,” as Pope Benedict XVI has urged us to do.

We created this online forum to generate 21^st century solutions to poverty using 21^st century technologies.  There is only one rule here -- Think Big.  We start this discussion with two questions that are vital to our fight against poverty. You will help us shape the discussion and frame the debate.

Let us know what you think. What best practices can you share?  What are the Big Ideas that will make poverty disappear in our lifetimes? Who else should be a part of this discussion?  I look forward to your input and our collaboration.

Nosotros en Catholic Charities USA tenemos como meta reducir la pobreza a la mitad para el año 2020. Nosotros lograremos esta meta “pensado y actuando en forma diferente” como su Santidad el Papa Benedicto XVI nos lo ha pedido.

Hemos creado este foro en línea para generar soluciones propias del siglo 21 a la pobreza, usando tecnología del siglo 21.  Existe una sola regla - - Piense en Grande.  Necesitamos empezar esta conversación con dos preguntas vitales para pelear contra la pobreza.  Usted puede ayudarnos a desarrollar la discusión y formular el debate.

This online collaboration platform and forum is specifically designed to stimulate discussion and generate Big Ideas for reducing poverty in America.

These ideas will come from a broad range of professionals, educators, elected officials, philanthropists, corporate and foundation leaders, etc., as well as Catholic Charities employees who see poverty first-hand every day.

This platform will capture both real experience and new ideas that will allow us to continue these discussions over the next few weeks. Those ideas will be used to advocate for real, sustainable change. 

Here's How it Works

• The forum will open on January 21^st and will continue until June 2010. After you register you will be able to contribute your Big Ideas to solve poverty in America, or follow the discussion and comment as ideas come to mind. We want to hear best practices from your communities -- and also collaborate to develop new approaches for the future. 

• The Moderator and Regional Moderators will monitor the discussions and will suggest topics to be explored further. The ideas generated from this forum will be turned into policy platforms and shared with our broader community.

• Please check back with us on a regular basis and keep the ideas and conversations flowing.

Greetings!  I’m Gregory Kepferle, CEO of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County.  Thank you for joining this forum, which builds on the discussions we began at the Catholic Charities Leadership Summit in San Jose, CA and San Antonio, TX. 

Over the next couple of week, I will be moderating this conversation as together we bring a new level of community involvement to addressing and solving poverty in this country.

My goal is to keep the discussion on topic and moving forward in our search for the next Big Idea and to draw from you experiences that belong in a national campaign to end poverty.  I look forward to our collaboration.
